Duty Bearers are an essential component in the mainstreaming of Disability Rights among authorities and government departments in Zimbabwe. This cascades to the domestication of United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities(UNCRPD).

Development Aid from People to People(DAPP) with the funding from European Union(EU) on Tuesday convened a Duty Bearers training workshop on UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities(UNCRPD) in Bindura’s Mashonaland Central Province.

The engagement invited a wide audience participation of representatives from Ministries of Information, Women Affairs, Education, Local Governments, Local Authorities and Traditional.
“We engaged Duty Bearers in mainstreaming disability rights in the initiation of Youth Actions on implementation and monitoring of Disability Rights in Zimbabwe,” says Esnath Guranai, DAPP’s Programs Officer.

The symposium became an opportune time for duty bearers to reflect on their own ways to embrace and prioritize disability persons in their respective ministries.
Matthew Nyagumbo, Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Provincial Officer for Mashonaland Central said their office has done commendably well in articulating disability issues.
“As a Ministry we have prioritized dissemination of information on rights of disabled persons with the latest development being that of having duty bearers handling such issues.”
Judith Hove , Mashonaland Central Development Officer, Ministry of Women Affairs said her office gave disabled persons to find access to the funds unveiled by the ministry.

“As the Ministry responsible for women affairs we are giving first priority to persons with disabilities,” she said.
Chief Ishmael Masembura a Traditional Leader from Mashonaland Central spoke to Spotlight Online News Africa on his partnerships with authorities and NGO forums in handling disability rights.
“As chiefs we are already working with NGOs, Civic Society Organizations and Authorities on various issues affecting disabled persons in their lives.”

Ministry of Youths prioritized disabled persons on the funds unveiled last month with Ministry of Education attempting to provide a user friendly for all leaners.
