Government stance on the use of US dollar

The Government has maintained that it has no plans to abandon the local currency which has of late been diminishing in value against the US dollar.

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi made the remarks on Wednesday’s Parliamentary Debate during question and answer question.

The question came from Harare East Legislator Tendai Biti seeked clarity on government stance towards officializing the use of US Dollar.

“I have already explained that the government have no plans to abandon our local currency but we have plans to make it our sole trade currency,” he said.

Ziyambi however admitted to the current use of the US dollar which he said it was allowed by the Ministry Finance to be functional during the COVID-19 pandemic.
