Hungry chicken thief gets community service

A Closed-circuit television (CCTV) sold out a Bindura Chicken Matty restaurant employee who stole 40 dressed chickens valued at $ZW2 080 from the company’s cold room before being prosecuted.

Albert Mhizha (35) was slapped with 140 hours of community service by Bindura magistrate Maria Msika yesterday.

Prosecutor Vincent Marunya told the court that on October 31 at around 7 pm Mhizha was on duty at the restaurant where he first opened the cold room and stole 20 chickens which were in the sack before coming for his final loot minutes later.

The company director Tawanda Matangira (41) discovered that 40 chickens were missing and he went to the CCTV to check on what happened to the missing chickens before discovering the culprit.

In mitigation Mhizha pleaded for a non-custodial sentence saying hunger prompted him to commit the offence.

“May the honourable court spare me a jail term, l committed this offence due to hunger and l also have a family to look after so if l go to jail they will starve all the more since l am their bread winner,” lamented Mhizha.
