Zimbabwe is among many countries of the world that ratified United Nations Convention on Persons with Disability(UNCRPD) which calls for action and implementation.

Development Aid from People to People(DAPP) with the help of Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) and European Union as the funding partner is in the process of implementing disability action rights in the districts of Shamva, Bindura and Rushinga under Mashonaland Central Province.

Last week Friday, the NGO Forum held a Training Programme for Disabled Persons Organizations(DPOs) on Leadership and Governance in Bindura.

During the engagement, some of the major highlights anchored on the relevance of information sharing and knowledge transfer to Disabled Persons Organizations(DPOs), as a tool in ensuring thier rights in line with UN Convention on Persons with Disabilities.

Esnath Guranai DAPP Programmes Officer said the training programme ensured Disabled Persons Organization(DPOs) aquired relevant information on thier rights and at the same time enlightening them on procedures to facilitate thier registration under Social Warefare.

“Some of the Persons with Disabilities lack information and general understanding on what needs to be done to lobby for thier rights and sometimes having knowledge on procedures to set up thier own DOPs under Ministry of Social Warfare.”

DAPP have so far championed training initiatives through capacity building that spearheaded formalization of DPOs under Social Warefare.

The majority are drawn from the districts of Bindura, Shamva and Rushinga.

Previously a number of Persons with Disabilities lacked information that pertains to advantages of registering under Social Wafare and backdrops of affiliating under an unregistered Disabled Persons Organization(DPOs).

Yvonne Tom an Officer with Department of Social Warefare who was among facilitators during the Training Programme explained on the importance of registering of a DPO under the Parent Ministry.

“Some organizations might opt to operate as affiliates of DPOs registered with us (Social Warefare) but its is also important if they are formalized under us. Once an organization is captured under our data base it becomes easy for us to incorporate it in the Programmes of relevant NGO Forums like DAPP.”

Abdullah Mukanyela Chairman of Good Vision Disability Organization(GVDO) said the training programs has helped members in the disability community on registering a Private Voluntary Organization (PVO), making them lobby for thier rights.

“Information sharing is important as we are become aware of existing programs in our community.”
“The mobilization has equipped people with disabilities with the knowledge on registering a PVO and this initiate advocacy on our rights.”
