The initiation of United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons With Disabilities(UNCRPD) in Shamva by Development Aid From People to People(DAPP) has spearheaded to the formation of disabled persons organization.
DAPP in partnership with Leonard Cheshire Disability and European Union (UN) is currently implementing a programme on disability mainstreaming.
Tariro Iripo is a Shamva based Disabled Persons Organization (DPOs) found after Dapp unleashed capacity building initiatives in the community.
Maison Jamu Tariro Iripo Secretary General told this news crew some of the positive strides made so far by the Disabled Persons Organization(DPO) in Shamva area.
“Many thanks to Dapp, because of them we now know our rights through UNCRPD. Today we have a Disabled Persons Organization of our own with the main aim to raise advocacy on disability rights and inclusion in Shamva,” he said.
He added that their organization has already started engaging the community on disability awareness and inclusion.
“Today we are a happy family, DAPP assisted us in the formation of our own disabled persons organization and so far we have started to engage the community in raising awareness on disability issues. We are receiving positive response in every engament that we make,”he added.
The organization which has a considerable number of members usually contacts meetings at Shamva’s District Office where it engages councilors and community leaders.
“We usually conduct meetings with Councilors and community leaders at DA’s office as we continue on our awareness programs.”
The organizational members have since moved away from charity models towards initiatives that fosters independence and self reliance.
“Through DAPP we learnt that we now need to move away from Charity based models, where we used to earn a living through begging. A lot of our members are now into self employment and are now taking care of themselves.”
Tariro Iripo Disabled Persons Organization now has an office where people with disabilities in Shamva comes to access information.
