Soldier killed in a mine shaft panning gold

A soldier died after being crashed by rocks while in a mine shaft panning for gold at Mazowe mine on Tuesday.

Wellington Marongoro died after the shaft collapsed.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe could not be reached for comment.

According to Marongo’s relative , he had visited his wife who is a teacher at Mamini Primary School in Guruve when he decided to pan for gold to supplement the couple’s mearge income when he met his fate.

“It is so sad that we lost our relative who had come to see his wife and children in Guruve but due to the crippling economy he decided to supplement the couple’s income by illegal mining at Mazowe mine but unfortunately he died in the process,” said the source.

Meanwhile, many people are dying on daily basis at Mazowe mine due to unsafe methods of mining.
