A 22 year old Harare man has been jailed for allegedly impersonating Trevor Dongo via WhatsApp and Facebook.
The Harare Magistrates Court heard the alleged impersonator Praise Dzvete started using an account dubbed Trevor Dee extorting money and sexually exploiting unassuming fans between January 2020 and January 2021.
The alleged cyber-criminal was also found in possession of a military wear belonging to a soldier stationed at Inkomo Barracks.
The alleged celebrity identity thief also had another WhatsApp account named Talent Dongo which he used alongside Trevor’s.
He was denied bail on the basis of having no fixed address as according to state witness Detective Chikerema, “he stayed at Churu Farm an ‘informal settlement in Glen View high density suburb.”
According to the State witness, Dzvete also had multiple WhatsApp accounts he used to chat with the fans.
An Ecocash number was registereed under Trevor Dongo’s name and the detectives are still investigating on how they were registered. He used another WhatsApp account allegedly posing as Trevor Dongo’s young brother named Talent. He also had a NetOne number in use for this ploy.
“I was surprised how he came up with that trick of having a young brother as I’m the only male in my family,” Trevor D said. “The WhatsApp account ndiwo aaishandisa kuzviita Trevor on the other one the on the other one aizviita Trevor’s young brother so aizoita plan yekuti vanhu would send money to be collected by the young brother yet he was the same person playing two roles.”
Dzvete during cross examination initially denied owning any Facebook account or WhatsApp but later admitted soliciting and collecting money for airtime from the fans.
Harare Magistrate Matova denied the accused bail placing him under custody until March 1, 2021.
