It was activities gallore at Rimuka grounds and hall during the initial edition of the Mash West provincial youth games last Tuesday, with a beauty pageant held on the night before the finals.
Teams participated in soccer, netball, handball, volleyball darts and snooker.
Miss Mashonaland West beauty pageant was held at Rimuka Hall, Saturday night.
After the pageant contest, 20 year old Princess Zhira came out tops walking away ZWL$400 richer ahead of another 20 year old brunnet, first princess Kindra Motsi who collected ZWL$300 for her beauty.
Bagging the second princess tag earned Monalisa Marufu (22) ZWL$200.
In the sports category, participating teams and individuals received various prizes. Mirirai Mapurisa was best player in the football category and won ZWL$100 cash.
Kadoma Central Constituency were the overall winners in football who got ZWL$800 and a trophy.
Chegutu West Constituency came second collecting ZWL$400 and a trophy while Chinhoyi Constituency received ZWL$200 for their efforts.
There was fierce competiton in netball where Muzvezve Constituency came out tops ahead of Mhangura and Kadoma Central Constituencies who settled for second and third positions in that order.
Vimbai Mbengo of Mhangura Constituency was voted best netball player.
Winning individuals and teams were handed the same prizes as their football counterparts.
Darts players were also rewarded as they got ZWL$300 that they would share among themselves.
Kadoma Central Constituency ruled the roost in volley ball with Chegutu West coming out second.
It was such a dominance by Kadoma Central Constituency that it got the top gong in snooker, darts and handball. Handball was an all Kadoma Central teams affair divided into four clusters. . Ruling party Constituency representatives fell over each other giving bonuses to teams from their constituencies.
Cde Mike Chimombe and Muzvezve Constituency MP and Deputy Agriculture Minister Vangelis Haritatos dominated in topping up prize money.
Cde Haritatos is also secretary for finance and this saw the entirety of Provincial leadership sponsoring the event in various capacities. ZANU PF Mashonaland West Provincial Youth wing leadership mooted the idea which came to successful fruition at the vast sports arena.
Chief organizer, provincial youth chairperson Cde Vengi Musengi announced that this will be an annual event.
Guest of Honour, ZANU PF National Deputy Youth Secretary Lewis Matutu mentioned sport as a unifier even in difficult times.
“We’re in a situation where the picture is not what we desire. However, sport unites us. Government is taking measures to improve the situation with the introduction of Zupco buses in the transport sector and reign in unethical business dealers to cushion citizens. Corruption should be tackled by the youth. As the youth, we should never be afraid of names but, have respect for our nation. Sanctions must go as they are a burden to all of us,” said Cde Matutu.
The two day sports fiesta saw youths from all districts in the province fighting for honours in a way that showed determination, commitment and talent abound.
Cde Musengi was satisfied with the level of discipline at the sports showcase.
“I’m happy with the level of discipline demonstrated by the youths participating in these games. They are the first of its kind in the province. We’re convinced that this should be replicated in other districts as well. So, we will move to other districts. Its a platform for enjoyment and sports development,” said the elated chairperson.
Referee Tanaka Mandityira concurred similar sentiments saying the 2019 sports edition was marked with notable improvements on the participants side.
“This time, players are disciplined,and there is high level of competition. Cautions and red cards were,very limited.” he said.
