Zvirekwi returns to training after hand amputated

By Sports Reporter

CAPS UNITED captain Hardlife Zvirekwi returned to training on Thursday, less than a month since he had a horrific car accident which led to the amputation of his hand from the wrist.

When images of his severely damaged car and his amputated hand were shown in March, many were in doubt the Warriors star would play professional football again, let alone compete for a position with the rest of his teammates.

He was soon to be replaced with Oscar Machapa with club CEO Cuthbert Chitima saying at the time that the tough defender could make a dream comeback to the fold during the second half of the season.

But the Makepekepe regular has put up a brave face since the accident, right up to the point of his return to training.

Zvirekwi, often seen in a bubbly mood on the VIP enclosure during Caps United matches, on Thursday ran 10 laps at the ZIFA Village, venue for the Caps United training.

It was not clear if his coach Lloyd Chitembwe may think of fielding him anytime soon.

Should he make it on to the field of play, it may be the first time in the history of Zimbabwe’s professional football for a player with an amputated body part played competitive football.

Zvirekwi may not be the first Zimbabwean professional footballer however to return to the field of play after a serious car accident.

Former Dynamos captain Memory Mucherahowa returned to inspire the popular Harare side after being involved in a car crash that killed teammate Watson Muhoni on new year’s eve 1998 when the players were on their way to a social match during off season.

In 2015, exciting FC Platinum linkman Charles Sibanda was also involved in a car crash that damaged his ribs in Bulawayo.

A year later, Dynamos star Valentine Ndaba was left hospitalised for serious bruises and cuts on his right shoulder and chin following a car accident in Harare’s Borrowdale suburb.

But in all these cases, the players had no body parts severed.
